A plastic tube clipped on to the front of a baseball cap could be an unlikely cure for vertigo. Many cases of vertigo are caused when tiny crystals in the inner ear are dislodged. The device works by encouraging the crystals back into place. The tube can be seen by the wearer and is shaped like a fork with two prongs at the end. These prongs contain liquid and one contains a tiny ball. The idea is that by twisting their head in certain directions, the wearer shifts the ball out of one prong then into the shaft of the fork. With more twists the ball is guided into the second prong.

Vertigo affects up to to one in ten people. For most the symptoms pass within a minute or two, but in severe cases it can lead to vomiting, light-headedness and an ability to walk or stand. The condition can be caused by a range of disorders, including poor circulation, arthritis in the neck and migraine. One of the most common types, "benign paroxysmal positional vertigo" is triggered when tiny crystals become dislodged in the inner ear.

These crystals are normally situated deep inside the ear, where they help sensitive hair cells to transmit information on gravity and balance to the brain. Simple actions like rolling over in bed can make them float out of position. As a result the brain gets the wrong messages about where the body is in the context of its surroundings. In the early nineties, American ear specialist, Dr John Epley discovered that by twisting the head in certain directions the tiny crystals could be guided back into place. Research has shown that the so called Epley manoeovre can cure up to eighty percent of vertigo sufferers.
